Origins of Virtual Reality

3d robotVirtual reality is actually a broader term for computer simulated environments.

Most of the time, this solely involves visual perception. People can enjoy such virtual reality environments by viewing images on a screen or through stereoscopic displays. Sometimes, however, other sensory input is included in the virtual reality experience. This could include audio and tactile input.

To this day, no one is clearly sure regarding the origins of the term virtual reality. However, it has been in use since the late 1980s, even though some of the usage is quite different from what is generally understood today.
